Winter sinks its teeth in

Sam Terry, Tuesday July 8, 2008 - 17:38 EST

Over WA a high has been dominating the weather. This system, in unison with very dry air, has helped overnight temperatures to cool down quite a bit. Eucla had a low today of 2, 5 below average and its coldest morning in thirteen months. It was similar throughout the region.

In eastern Australia it was the maximums that were quite chilly. So far, Melbourne has had its coldest day in a year, reaching only 10, 3 below average. It stayed below 7 degrees until about lunchtime.

Tewantin on QLD's Sunshine Coast had its coldest day in thirteen months. It reached only 15, 6 below average, and also its coldest July day on record. It would have been very similar for the other towns nearby.

In contrast Sydney had an above average day, reaching 17. However tomorrow is forecast to be a lot cooler, 14, as a colder air mass moves through. This could end up being its coldest day since last August.
