In Sydney's west Penrith reached a scorching 39 degrees, just one shy of Bourke's top of 40.

Sydney (37) and Mascot (39) both recorded their second hottest day of the year to date.

The result of strong northwesterly winds, by mid afternoon the heat was quickly being replaced by a cooler southwesterly change. At 3pm Wagga Wagga had dropped to just 20 degrees, after reaching a high of 31.

By early evening the change was likely to reach Sydney, where temperatures will hover near 20 degrees until week's end.
