For the first time this season fairly widespread thunderstorms fired up over northern Australia on Tuesday, a classic indication of the upcoming wet season.
A storm passing over Delamere in the western Top End around noon dumped 14mm of rain in just over half an hour, their heaviest fall in eight months.
While showers and thunderstorms will be generally suppressed over the next week or two it is likely the easterly trade winds will weaken towards the end of October, allowing rainfall events to increase over the northern tropics. However, the true monsoon rains are still a long way off with tropical Australia's wettest months spanning January to March.
