Southeast Australia rattled by gusty winds

Josh Fisher, Sunday February 5, 2012 - 12:09 EDT

Warm northerly winds are strengthening over Victoria ahead of a rigorous cold front, which will bring an abrupt end to the recent heat.

The northerly winds have been gusting as high as 117km/h at Mount William and up to 104km/h in Colac, some of the highest winds in months. Melbourne has also experienced the gusty winds, reaching up to 83km/h.

A severe weather warning is in place for the risk of further damaging wind gusts in the South West, North Central, Northern Country, Wimmera, Central and Northeast districts. These winds have the potential to gust between 90-100km/h across these districts, with locally higher gusts to 110km/h over elevated regions.

These northerly winds are strengthening ahead of a rigorous cold front, which has already surged into South Australia this morning. The front is bringing a colder west-southwest change, with winds gusting between 70 and 80km/h around Adelaide and as high as 85km/h over coastal areas.

This cold front will push through Victoria during this afternoon, bringing a rapid end to the warm temperatures. The change is expected to reach Melbourne between 3 and 5pm today, with rain, storms and gale force southwest winds.

Melbourne's forecast temperature for Monday is only expected to peak at 23 degrees, which is around 10 below the temperatures experienced during the past few days. The southwest wind flow will maintain the cool temperatures during the next week.
