Severe weather for northern NSW

Sam Terry, Saturday October 4, 2008 - 18:10 EST

The NSW thunderstorm season is well under way as the last few days has shown. For much of today, storms have been firing up in the north and west.

Currently, the most severe weather is occurring in the north and northeast. Storms are being generated in a line from QLD's southwest through to the NSW mid-north coast, and are continuing to track further east. So far, the greatest potential for damage lies with storm-induced wind gusts, with Ballera receiving a 139 km/h gust. A Severe Storm Warning has been issued by the Bureau for this very reason.

Tomorrow, a trough sitting over the state is expected to move slightly north. The trough is acting as a trigger and, along with moist air and high instability, will cause more storms tomorrow. The most severe of the storms will fire up over the North West Slopes and Plains, with definite potential for large hail and more damaging gusts.
