Heat wave ahead: Melbourne

The mercury is rising as extreme weather events continue to plague the nation. While parts of the NSW coast suffer from floods, the southern state of Victoria is set to melt under a heat-wave similar to that of January this year.

Already on Saturday maximum temperatures rocketed significantly above average, up to 11 above the November norm in the Central and Mallee
districts.

Thermometers in Mildura measured 34 degrees; in Horsham it was 33; and it was a sizzling 35 in Walpeup.

Melbourne itself peaked at 31, only the hottest in about a week, but
definitely an omen of things to come.

Hot northeasterly winds will persist over Melbourne until at Tuesday.
If the maximum temperature peaks above 30 degrees for each of these days, it will be the longest heat wave of this strength this close to winter in over 150 years.

Coastal parts of Victoria stayed virtually on-average during Saturday, a handy escape plan for the hot days ahead.
