Cold change ripping through southeast

Jessica Trevena, Monday October 13, 2008 - 18:23 EDT

In typical hot-cold Spring style, a cold change is knocking double digits off muggy temperatures in Victoria and New South Wales.

The change gusted through Victoria earlier this morning, leading to the backwards situation where todays maximums struggled to climb just couple of degrees above last nights extreme minimums.

Late this afternoon, the temperature in Canberra dropped 9 degrees in 10 minutes as a band of storms near the change crossed the region. The temperature in the capital is now sitting 12 degrees below the 26 degree maximum recorded earlier today.

The storms also brought heavy rain, dumping around 8mm in just 10 minutes over Tuggeranong. Over the Tinderry ranges east of the ACT, falls of 20mm brought the most rain in 4 months.

Wind gusts over the southeast heralded the change as well as the rain, with Montague Island gusting to 107 km/h and Bombala 85 km/h.
