An unusual November heat wave

Josh Fisher, Friday November 6, 2009 - 18:04 EDT

Southern parts of the country are about to be baked in an extended period of hot temperatures. The heat is not unusual, but it is the length of its stay that is expected to shatter November records.

The situation is setting itself today as a strong high moves into the Tasman, which will act as a shield, deflecting any weather system that tries to bring a change. For the south, the high will also direct hot northeasterly winds over the region.

Adelaide will see its first day reaching over 30 degrees tomorrow and by Sunday temperatures will soar to around 35 degrees. Looking into next week the heat will not be budging, with temperatures rising into the upper thirties.

Adelaide's record heat wave for November was 115 years ago, with four consecutive days of temperatures reaching 35 degrees. This record is likely to be matched or even broken with this event.

Melbourne will feel the heat too, nearing 30 degrees on Saturday and staying above 30 degrees into next week, potentially matching their November record (22 years) of four consecutive days above 30 degrees.

Although, coastal areas could see afternoon seabreezes but temperatures will still stay warm.
