Amazing July rainfall for eastern Australia

Sam Terry, Tuesday July 8, 2008 - 17:13 EST

In terms of rain, the last 24 hours have brought significant falls right across the country's east.

The last couple of days has seen a trough tracking through QLD, with a deepening moisture layer. As a result, many places have had their heaviest July rain in quite some time. This includes Brisbane, which received 24mm to 9am, making it its wettest July day in seven years. Maroochydore, as well as picking up one of the state's heaviest 9am totals of 52mm, had its heaviest July rain in 9 years.

In VIC, it was a similar affair. A cold pool lingering over the state's south has brought widespread rain, with many totals reaching 20mm. The most notable rainfall was had at Mortlake, topping the state rainfall with 52mm and no less than their wettest day in at least 14 years.

Tomorrow, rainfall shouldn't be as awe-inspiring, with the trough and front system moving off into the Tasman.
