A dangerous combination in the east

Josh Fisher, Friday November 6, 2009 - 17:55 EDT

Mother Nature has stirred up a dangerous weather combination for northeast New South Wales and southeast Queensland. This combination has shown its potential in yesterday's storms and could bring similar conditions today.

As a trough remains nearly stationary in the east, northeasterly winds are feeding large amounts of moisture into it. These factors combined with cool air in the upper atmosphere brought storms and heavy rainfalls.

From the storms yesterday, Queensland saw heavy rain, frequent lightning and large hail. Ipswich received a staggering 23mm of rain in just ten minutes. Allora saw 66mm from the storms, making it their best rainfall in one year.

It was not just the heavy rain, but also the hail battered some areas. Some saw hail large enough to damage houses and cars, reaching up to cricket ball size.

Northeast New South Wales was also hard hit, with some regions receiving over 100mm of rain. Lowanna picked up 114mm to 9:00am, making it their best November rain in 34 years.

The storms are firing up again this afternoon, with heavy rain and flash flooding possible. The chance for hail still exists too, mainly for southeast Queensland.
